About Stara Planina National Park

Stara Planina National Park, established in 1991, encompasses a large portion of Bulgaria’s Balkan Mountains, known locally as Stara Planina. This mountainous area stretches across central Bulgaria and is noted for some of the wildest and most untouched terrain in the country. The park covers diverse ecosystems, including dense beech and fir forests, alpine meadows, rocky ridges, and deep valleys. It is home to numerous endemic and rare species, providing excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, including brown bears, wolves, chamois, and various raptors.

The park’s geography features a mix of gently rolling hills and dramatic cliffs, with notable formations like the peaks Botev, the highest in the Balkan Mountains at 2,376 meters. Visitors can explore extensive hiking trails, many of which connect to Bulgaria’s famous Kom-Emine trail that traverses the entirety of the Balkan ridge. Key landmarks include the picturesque waterfall Raysko Praskalo, one of the highest in the Balkans, and cultural sites such as the Shipka Pass—a historic mountain pass with significant importance in Bulgarian history.

Recreation in Stara Planina National Park emphasizes backcountry hiking, wildlife photography, birdwatching, and mountain biking. The park’s remote setting appeals to adventure seekers and nature lovers, offering a serene escape from urban life. Seasonal variations bring lush greenery and vibrant wildflowers in summer, colorful foliage in autumn, and snow-covered trails in winter suitable for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Visitor infrastructure is minimal but sufficient, with mountain huts and small villages serving as access points and overnight stops.
